Does anyone know what the top speed of the 3?
I assume that it is governed, but what is the limit?
Has anyone tried, or is willing to test this?
Is it the same for the 2.0 and the 2.5?

I believe all Japanese road cars are limited to this speed, by law.

Last time I tried doing that in a car I was 16, and got a ticket.
The officer had mercy on me and gave me a regular old speeding ticket -- instead of the standard 6 month license revocation for going 100mph+ and a reckless. Almost a decade later, that's still my first and last run-in with the law.

If they're rated to 118 mph, then why the heck do companies put speedometers on cars up to 200 mph? This makes absolutely no sense what so ever! Give us a speedometer up to 125 and make the dial easier to read (maybe giving us 10 mph demarcations, instead of 20).

That's a good point. However, a lof of people like to participate in SCCA and similar events. Of course, the governors would be removed for those. Mazda loves to toss around the fact that "On any given weekend, there are more Mazdas on the road-race tracks of America than any other brand of vehicle." lol

It could be, but Mazda still says they're king. I'm with ya' on the guages though. I would be okay with it maxing out at 120-130. They could reserve the 160 guages for the MS3.

Definitely agree there... Hmmm, wonder if the MZ3 Speed is governed the same way?

A lot of cars are limited due to the tires. They come from the factory with tires rated "R" or "S" (106 and 112 mph respectively), so they limit the cars speed to that for liability reasons.
Other cars are limited due to safety concerns, often due to aero considerations--my 2003 Mustang Cobra would hit 170 without even trying hard, but above 150 mph it got terribly light on the front end, I could literally nudge the steering wheel left and right and the car didn't respond. By 170 mph you couldn't correct the direction at all and it was best to shut it down.
Anyway, I'm game to find out what ZZ will do. Hadn't thought about top speed on her. The Magnum easily hit's its limiter at 168 mph just as advertised, and it's actually much more stable than the Cobra was.
There's a road about 45 minutes from me in the high desert that is fun to top speed on. I'll take her out for a spin next time my wife is working from home (fewer cops out there on weekdays).
Whoever finds the top first should snap a photo of the speedo!

i'm sure there'll be a way to remove it once someone cracks the ecu. but if you can't do it yourself, then you don't really have a purpose for going faster than the limit anyway

There's really no reason to even approach the speed limiter during regular driving anyway. If you have the money to go racing, then you have the money to have the limiter removed. I also agree with ntechnic about tires. That's a huge factor as well.

I got it up to 110 MPH a couple weeks ago before I chickened out. It felt like it could easily keep going. It was awesome though. I was flying on a straight up near Lake George. The fastest I had ever gone before that was 125 MPH in my dad's Jag XJR.
